Climate and Public Health Tour: North West stage
The North West is the second stop on HXR’s Climate and Public Health UK banner tour. The banners display the crucial message that the climate emergency is the ‘greatest threat to human health’ and highlights the need for elected leaders to take urgent action to “End fossil fuels, Protect Public Health and Save Lives”.
In the UK, tens of thousands of people already die each year as a result of global heating, air pollution and the actions of fossil fuel companies. Millions more have died globally. CROSBY BEACH
On Saturday 8th August 2026, whilst the UK, Europe, Canada and many other locations around the world are on fire, a group of health professionals and residents from Merseyside gathered on Crosby beach to raise awareness of the Public Health emergency we all face.
The UK Health Security Agency recently estimated that there were 2,877 heat-associated deaths in England during May and June 2026 alone. In addition 29 people have drowned and terrifying wildfires have burnt in Scotland, Wales and several English counties. In Europe a scorching ‘heat dome’ has led to deaths, fires and the hottest day ever in France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary & Germany.
And so on a rather hot and sunny Saturday, the group walked onto the beach and unfurled the 3 giant banners to share these crucial messages with dog walkers and other beach users.
Outreach was carried out with leaflets about the public health issues, and also flyers advertising the upcoming free ‘Peoples Emergency Briefing’ film to be shown in Crosby on Sept 30th (see https://www.nebriefing.org/ and https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map for details). The majority of people who had conversations were rightly very concerned about what is happening to our climate and natural environment. The banner backdrop of windfarms emphasised the crucial need to stop burning fossil fuels and to invest instead in renewable energy.

LIVERPOOL, LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE
On 29th September 2025, HXR members and community members rolled out our huge banners at Liverpool’s Pier Head, during The Labour Party Conference, to draw the attention of elected leaders and the public to the urgent need to “End fossil fuels, Protect Public Health and Save Lives”.
It is over a year since Labour were elected, having made big promises on the climate, including a commitment to become “a clean energy superpower”. While they have taken some forward steps, their environmental plans, their appeal against the Rosebank oil field ruling, and their focus on nuclear power, blue hydrogen and carbon capture raise real concerns. In addition they are not telling the public about the huge health harms. Nor are they, as HXR demanded in their recent “climate and health press briefing” outside parliament, committing to taking immediate, joined-up, and urgent action to prevent and adapt to the climate and health emergency.
