On a Saturday each month, HXR members join Plymouth XR in their silent vigil as part of their campaign to demand that Barclays bank stops financing fossil fuels. According to the ‘Banking on Climate Chaos’ 2023 Fossil Fuel Finance Report, Barclays is the 7th largest banking investor in fossil fuels globally, and the leading European banking investor in fossil fuels. Despite the Paris Agreement of 2015 Barclays has continued to invest over £43 billion in new fossil fuel projects. According to a War on Want report, Barclays also hold £1,300,688,880 in shares of companies whose weapons, components, and military technology have been used in unlawful violence against Palestinians in Gaza.

Alongside their vigil, the Plymouth XR group undertake outreach to the publi. As well as highlighting how Barclays contributes to the climate emergency, they encourage members of the public to check MotherTree’s carbon emmision bank league table to see their own bank’s performance and to use Switch it Green to help them move their account to an ethical bank. The local XR drumming group have also performed outside Barclays on a previous Saturday.
